About the Name
Viscereality isn’t actually a word…but it kind of should be. Visceral means something going on at the gut level. For instance, if something is going on the world around us, there are a few ways we respond. One is cognitive–what I think is happening. Another is emotional–what I feel is happening. But we also respond on the visceral level, sort of like intuition. Usually we don’t name those responses…they sort of flavor our whole perception of everything. We can say “I think this should have happened differently” and we can say “I am upset,” but it’s really hard to give a name to the feelings we have at the deeper levels…They both are our responses and they shape our vision of the world–our perception of reality.
That’s why I wanted to blend visceral and reality. Because if reality is to some degree constructed, then our gut level reactions really matter. They shape our interpretation of reality. It’s no longer simply reality…its viscereality…
